Former Houston Astros star Alex Bregman made a significant move on the diamond this winter as he left Houston for the Boston Red Sox. Bregman's father, Sam, is now considering a career change of his own.
Sam Bregman, the district attorney for Bernalillo County in Albuquerque, New Mexico, officially launched his campaign for the state's governorship on Thursday. Current Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will reach her term limit in 2026, and Thursday marked the official start of the race for the Democratic nomination in the governor's race. Bregman is expected to compete in the Democratic primary against Deb Haaland, the former U.S. Interior Secretary.
Alex Bregman didn't appear in his dad's first campaign video, which launched Thursday. One sight in the video that may be familiar to Astros fans is Sam Bregman's signature cowboy hat, a former staple at Houston playoff games during the club's Golden Era.
The elder Bregman kicked off his campaign with a video in which he noted, "New Mexico is under attack," using his platform to criticize both "Elon Musk and his puppet Donald Trump" as well as "weak, ineffective" Democrats in Washington.
"MAGA power brokers, they don’t care about you or me. They’re making their friends filthy rich while assaulting our people and our Constitution," Sam Bregman said. "Meanwhile, Democrats in Washington have been weak, ineffective and complicit with all this madness and it’s the intolerance of the radical left that has divided our party at a time when we need everyone to unite in the fight against Trump.
"Whether it’s them or the MAGA extremists, they’ve all hijacked our politics, leaving everyday New Mexicans in the dust. To be blunt, people are tired of this garbage.”
It's unclear whether a message from the tough-talking attorney will ignite a strong start in the polls. As for Sam's son, he's off to quite the hot start in his new home. Alex Bregman boasts an OPS+ 27 percent above the league average in his first 14 games with Boston, hitting seven extra-base hits with 12 RBI.
