Sam Bregman, father of former Houston Astros star Alex Bregman, announced he is running for governor of New Mexico on Thursday.
Current governor Michelle Lujan Grishman, who selected Bregman to be the Bernalillo County district attorney in 2023, has reached her term limit and won’t be running for re-election in 2026.
That sets up a showdown in the Democratic primary between Bregman and former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland in a state that hasn’t voted Republican in a presidential election since 2004. Haaland was in Congress before being picked as part of President Joe Biden’s cabinet in 2021.
In a campaign ad that debuted Thursday with Bregman riding a horse and wearing the cowboy hat he was frequently seen wearing while watching his son play for the Astros, fired attacks at Donald Trump, while also shooting at “the radical left.”
“New Mexico is under attack,” Bregman says in the ad. “By Elon Musk, his puppet Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington. They’re attacking our public schools, our healthcare, veterans, workers, all of us. MAGA power brokers, they don’t care about your or me. They’re making their friends filthy rich while assaulting our people and our Constitution. Meanwhile, Democrats in Washington have been weak, ineffective and complicit with all this madness and it’s the intolerance of the radical left that has divided our party at a time when we need everyone to unite in the fight against Trump. Whether it’s them or the MAGA extremists, they’ve all hijacked our politics, leaving everyday New Mexicans in the dust. To be blunt, people are tired of this garbage.”
Bregman’s famous son, who won two World Series with the Astros before signing with the Boston Red Sox in the offseason, didn’t appear in the video.
Bregman and Haaland each have chaired New Mexico’s Democratic party. A prominent Republican has yet to enter the 2026 race for Governor.
